Framing the Bookcases

Fall 2024 One Room Challenge, Week 5

It’s Week 5 of the Fall One Room Challenge and we are getting into some of the details now.  Since we brought the Murphy bed back in we decided it was time to call the electricians back and have them install the ceiling fan and new outlets and switches.

I also had them add an outlet for the TV that we will be putting in the nook across from the Murphy bed. Here’s a great shot of the new ceiling fan and you can see the outlets are in the bookcases and all around the room.

The next step with the bookcases and the Murphy bed is to add the face framing around the bookcases.  The face framing will close up any gaps between the Murphy bed and the bookcases and also between the bookcases and the walls. The other super important function of the face framing is that it will add framing for the drawers and doors. This was super time consuming but we have them all attached now and it’s looking good!

We even added framing to the top of the bookcases and Murphy bed in the hopes of having storage up top. We had our cabinet maker take a look and he is making our drawer and door fronts and agreed that we could use that hidden storage at the top. We are hoping to store less used items up there and maybe house some extra bedding for when the bed is in use.

Next up is priming the face framing before we attached it. The framing fits so snugly we decided to attach it before applying a coat of paint. That one layer of paint might have made the difference between fitting and not fitting. I painted the first coat of paint on the framing while Doug was working. And then I caulked everything and that took a TON of time!

Stay tuned for next week when we cut the shelves and prime and paint them. Once that is finished we will apply the final coat of paint to the bookcases. Actually, the theme of this next week is going to be paint, paint and more paint! Besides painting the bookcases, we still need to paint the baseboards and put in shoe moulding.

There is still so much to do but we’ve got this!!!  If you haven’t checked out the other participants’ projects yet, please go to One Room Challenge at ORC blog and see what others have done! There are so many great projects out there and it will be so exciting to see them come together! If you haven’t already, go give them some love! At this point in the challenge, everyone is starting to get a little weary! (Ask me how I know.) 😂
