Vintage Mirror Gallery Wall

We had our entire downstairs and common areas upstairs painted right before Covid hit at the end of 2019.  I’ll admit that I’ve had a hard time knowing how I wanted the whole space to evolve ever since. Well, that’s ridiculous, isn’t it? It’s okay though......living with it for a few years with nothing on the walls gave my brain a break and helped me to figure out how I wanted this space to look.

One of the places that I’ve always struggled with is the little slice of wall that’s angled going up the stairs. I've had mirrors there in the past but with the thermostat there it always seemed a little awkward. Well, why not just go whole hog and hang a bunch of mirrors to create a gallery which kind of just hides that pesky little thermostat?

I had these mirrors just propped up against the wall in our spare bedroom that I’m determined to turn into my office soon. More on that in another post. I feel like we’ve lived in that state since we moved into this house. It's been tough to figure out where to hang everything so that it doesn’t look like it did in the old house. Keep in mind that we’ve been in this house for 20 years now so having anything propped against the wall at this point is a little nuts, am I right?! 😂 It is and I’m not sure why I have decision paralysis for so long but life gets busy and so it is what it is.

Now, a little about these mirrors. The harness mirror is a family heirloom. Doug’s grandpa, Oscar Denzil, made that mirror and it is special to us. I fondly remember it hanging in their living room. I was so happy when Doug’s granny gave it to us but it didn’t quite fit with my aesthetic and so I had it in the spare room on the wall. It was hidden and that was no good. Since it is the mirror with the most unusual shape, its placement was the most important. I decided with its shape, it would need to go on the right side. It just felt right with that being the tallest side of the wall.

The gold Victorian mirror was found at an antique shop in Franklin called Bright’s Antique World. I found it there on a shopping trip with Doug, but I didn’t buy it because I thought it was too pricey and this was before the mirror gallery idea had popped into my head. So, when my sister came to visit last September, we headed down there to go thrifting. I had mentioned that mirror to her and asked her to be on the lookout for it while we shopped. I really had no hope that it would still be there. But guess what? I had described it to her so well that she spotted it and called me over! Yes, that’s it – what a score! 😊 So now when I look at that mirror, I think of the fun time I had with my sister, son and husband on that shopping trip!

The little silver hand mirror is one that Doug bought for our daughter when she was in high school. It’s hers when she wants it, but it can sit here on our wall until she’s ready for it!🥰

The oval mirror is a mirror I found at Hobby Lobby years ago. I bought it for this area beside the thermostat and it was hung there until we had the walls repainted. It’s always been a favorite because of its vintage flare.

Since the initial hanging of the mirror gallery, I have found two cypher trivets. One is from Williamsburg and has an “M” on it. We found it on the same shopping trip as the Victorian mirror. The other brighter gold trivet is the most recent addition. I found it on a shopping trip in Wilmington, North Carolina on a recent visit to my sister. We are not 100% sure of the letter, but my sister thinks it’s a “J”, so I decided to get it.

I really love the way this little wall has come together! This is a great example of blending vintage and modern for a seamless, pulled together vignette. What do you think?
