Coconut Bowl Review + How to Pick Out and Cut a Pineapple

Recently a company named Coconut Bowls reached out to me and asked if they could send me their product to try out and review. I was so excited since this is my first opportunity to review something like this!  First of all, Coconut Bowls is a sustainable company this is recycling coconut shells. I loved the idea of it because Doug and I were stationed in Hawaii for two different tours and coconuts are just as common as a pine tree in North Carolina. They are everywhere! Fun fact: Do you know the difference between a coconut tree and a palm tree?  They look very much the same. The coconut tree is a member of the palm family. The difference is that coconut oil, coconut water and coconut milk come from the coconut tree. The palm tree produces palm oil, palm fruit or dates.

These bowls are sturdy and no two are exactly alike which is pretty cool. I mean come on, everything is more fun to eat in a bowl. Just think a breakfast smoothie with fruit and granola on it, a bowl of fruit, dips, a salad, quinoa and vegetables or a fun dessert. The possibilities are endless! I even took one outside today to pick some fresh blueberries. These bowls are the perfect size for anything! I highly recommend that you try them out and you can find them at coconutbowls.com or @coconutbowls on Instagram.

Now let’s talk about one of my favorite fruits....the beautiful and delicious pineapple!

When we were stationed in Hawaii, we often went to the pineapple fields with our visitors and it was so cool to see these plants growing.  I have several local girlfriends in Hawaii and they were so kind as to teach me how to pick out a good pineapple that will be sweet and juicy and also how to cut one properly. There is also a little insider secret that I’ll share on pineapple prep.

This is how you pick out the perfect pineapple regardless of how green or golden it is:  turn it over and smell the bottom of it. If it smells like a pineapple, you’ve got a winner! 😊 If I can only buy a green pineapple, I will leave it out on the counter until it starts to turn golden and smells like a pineapple.

Now to cut a pineapple. I start by cutting off the bottom and then I turn it around and cut off the top. Now, I set it up on its bottom and start cutting down the sides. I keep cutting sections (usually 6) until the pineapple is free from the peeling.  At this stage, and this is super important. Generously salt the pineapple and rub the salt in. THIS is what neutralizes that acidity and now the pineapple will not burn your tongue. We’ve all been guilty of eating way too much pineapple until your tongue is sore, am I right?! I know I have! Well, no more.....now you know!

The next step is to cut it in half and half again. Now, stand it on end, and cut out the core. I then half these pieces again until I have spears. I then stack the two spears and cut them into chunks. Too easy! Now it’s time to enjoy!

What better way to enjoy this yummy pineapple than in one of these super cute and sustainable coconut bowls?! 😊
