Sugar-free Red Sangria
I’ve always loved sangria with white wine or red wine but I haven’t loved the sugar spike and ultimate hangover that comes with it.
Traditional red sangria calls for red wine, brandy and sugar. The last big party I helped to host, I made a sugar-free version of this fruity drink. Most people think of sangria as being a summertime drink. For me, this red sangria is the perfect winter drink. It’s dark, rich and festive with the use of winter fruits.
And, can I just say that it’s also light and not heavy? It’s something you could enjoy cozied up around a fire. Mmmmmmm.......let me dream about that just a second.....
Red Sangria Recipe (makes a pitcher)
2 tsp. Finely shredded lime peel
1 cup lime juice (I use this brand)
1/2 cup granulated swerve OR 4 T liquid stevia
1 bottle Pinot Noir or Syrah, chilled
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 orange, seeded and sliced
½ cup cranberries
Directions: Dissolve the swerve in the lime juice, add the lime zest and then add the bottle of wine. Once stirred together, pour in a pretty pitcher and add the fruit when ready to serve. If you want to use sugar, you may need a little more to sweeten the sangria. Just sample it until it’s sweet enough for you. But hey, don’t drink all of it before the party, okay?
If you’d like to just try this sangria recipe by the glass without committing to an entire pitcherful, please follow my directions below:
1 ounce lime juice
4-6 drops liquid stevia
4-5 ounces of your favorite red wine
Handful of chopped fruit
