Refinishing the Chair and Desk

Fall 2024 One Room Challenge, Week 7

It’s Week 7 of the Fall One Room Challenge and we are in the heat of it now! This week we are focused on getting the mid-century modern chair and desk refinished.  Doug was out of town last week and so I worked on painting as much as possible after work every day.

I’m so excited that I am now a #lowespartner and so before Doug left, we were able to hang up the new television courtesy of @loweshomeimprovement. I was blown away that they carry televisions. I really had no idea! Here are a few pictures of the type of hanger we used and the tv in place.  We were both a little skeptical about the design of the hanger but we ended up really liking it.  This hanger is very flush with the wall which is what I wanted in that nook.  I have to say, it was really nice having the tv in the room while I was painting so I could listen to a show.😊 I may or may not have blasted through most of a season of Love Is Blind.😂

Let’s talk about painting. I have painted the room, but never touched any of the trim. In fact, since we bought the house in 2003, the trim in this room has never been painted. The trim looked very yellow and dinged up so it was high time to give it a little glow up. Painting isn’t very glamourous, but here are some shots of what I worked on.

At the writing of this, we are still waiting for the cabinet maker to come back and make his adjustments. He didn’t really follow the style of the Murphy bed with what he added to the bookcases. He should be back this coming week and we are keeping our fingers crossed that this time, it’s exactly what we want it to be. I’m holding off on my final coat of paint until after he gets finished because I’m sure there will be touch-ups. I also have some touch-ups to do on the walls.

Now, on to these cool vintage pieces we are going to use in the room. Doug stripped the mid-century modern chair before he left town, but I didn’t have time to stain it while he was out of town so he took care of that when he got home. We went back and forth on what stain to use and if we even wanted to stain it. The chair had a deep color about it without a finish on it, but it looked like it was going to pull orange and I didn’t want that at all.  We ended up using Dark Walnut Minwax stain. As soon as Doug started to apply the stain I could tell the color was going to be great. There were a few places that didn’t take the stain very well so Doug sanded those spots a little more and re-stained. We think it looks great now and so he went ahead and applied the polyurethane. He added another coat while I continued painting the doors and the baseboard in the closet. Now that feels like a bit of a waste of time, but if you’re going to paint the trim, you might as well do it right, you know?

While I put the final coat of paint on the shelves, Doug started sanding the desk. A little story about the desk. It is a library table with two drawers and measures 72x34” - it’s going to be a good-sized desk for me! When we found the library table, the owner of Marigold Vintage told me that it came from Ford Motor Company and sure enough, there is a brass plate on the bottom of the desk.

We still have so much to do but mostly it’s cleaning up and styling the room. Here’s our to do list:

  • Stain and apply polyurethane to the desk

  • Attach the cushion to the mid-century modern chair

  • Clean up the room

  • Attach the baseboards

  • Install quarter round

  • Hang curtains

  • Style the room

  • Hope and pray that the cabinet maker comes this week😉

Okay, after making that list, we actually have a WHOLE LOT more to do! Stay tuned for next week when we will hopefully have it all pulled together. I can’t believe we only have another week to go!  I cannot tell you how excited I am to start actually working in this room! It will be the home office of my dreams.

It’s not too late to catch up on all of the other participants’ projects. There are so many exciting reveals about to come your way!  You can check out this week’s progress by checking out the One Room Challenge blog and see what others have done!
