DIY-ing the Murphy Bed

One Room Challenge, Week 5

It’s Week 5 of the One Room Challenge!

This week we finally started building the Murphy bed! We ordered the Murphy bed hardware kit from Amazon and the brand is @createabed – you can order directly from their site as well, but I thought it might be faster to order it from Amazon. They include a full cut list for building the box that houses the bedframe and mattress. The cut list was so helpful. It took a lot of the guesswork out and helped us to get started quickly.

We ordered the wood from Home Depot and Doug talked them into cutting the wood. Pretty smart, huh? Well, it was a great idea but it did not work out for us. They cut the wood, but overnight someone threw it away. When we got there to pick it up, it was gone. We wasted a whole day dealing with that and then we finally were able to get started the next day. At this point, we had to cut all of the wood ourselves. It took us an entire day. I’m feeling like we are a little behind now but we are putting some time in after work every day to try to get back on track.

We decided to go with a queen-size bed so there will be plenty of room for guests. I’m still holding on to the idea of incorporating my antique headboard into the design of this bed. We will attach it to the wall with an L-bracket so it can be easily removed if and when we move. Over the next week, I should know for sure whether I can use it or not.

We want the Murphy bed and bookcases to go all the way to the ceiling in this room. We will finish them with crown molding and hopefully be able to take it throughout the rest of the room. I was hoping to find cabinets / bookcases that are readymade for this project. I have now abandoned this notion altogether. We went a few places and did some research and everything is made so cheaply that we just decided we would build them ourselves. We would like the bottoms to have doors and a drawer so there is quite a bit of hidden storage as well as places to display our treasures.

To the right: Us using the leafblower to get all the sawdust off before going back in the house for a lunch break. 😂

Another reason I wanted to take the Murphy bed all the way to the ceiling is that it should create a storage space right over the bed for extra pillows and blankets for when the bed is not in use. Pretty clever, huh?

Stay tuned as we continue to build the Murphy bed. Next week, hopefully we will be working on the built-ins. You can check out progress from the other weeks by clicking on the links below. Also, don’t forget to check out the other talented participants in the One Room Challenge by visiting the ORC blog. See you next week!
