The Murphy Bed is Built!

One Room Challenge, Week 7

It’s Week 7 of the One Room Challenge and we have the Murphy bed built!!! We are starting to work on putting the trim on the front of the cabinet. I got the hardware for the cabinet and it’s beautiful! We still need to install the trim and paint everything and then we will be adding the hardware. Building this bed was really tough and time consuming. I believe the instruction booklet had 32 steps.  Well guess what? There’s a whole separate instruction book for assembling the bed with another 20 steps. In between the building and assembly, all of the bed hardware had to be removed so we could sand, prime and paint everything.

I had the electricians come and move some outlets for us and pump the electricity directly to where the built-ins will be.

In other fun news, I have received the hardware, curtain rods, curtains, bedding and even the mattress! Finding a mattress to fit the specifications of the Murphy bed was also a bit of a task. The mattress has to be less than 12” deep and weigh between 65-80 lbs. Believe it or not, that’s not a very readily available size! But, I found it at Tuft & Needle. I’ve slept on a Tuft & Needle hybrid mattress and it was quite dreamy. Hopefully this version, while not the hybrid, will be just as comfortable.

Look at us go! We’re the Murphy bed pit crew! 😂 Would you like to see my to do list?

It’s a little nuts but I feel like the rest of the tasks are going to go pretty quickly (I hope).

To Do List:

  • Apply trim to Murphy bed

  • Final coat of paint

  • Install hardware to front of bed

  • Install bed by anchoring to the wall

  • Build built-in bookcases

  • Install ceiling fan

  • Clean up dropcloths and the room

  • Roll out the rug

  • Hang curtains

  • Bring in the desk

  • Hang artwork

  • Style the room

  • Photograph the room

As you can see, my to do list is quite ambitious! Hopefully this is where my skill of working well with a deadline pays off! 😊

Stay tuned for Week 8 when we will hopefully have that to do list wrapped up and have a great reveal for you guys! I’m so excited to get to that stage!  Don’t forget to check out the other participants in the One Room Challenge at ORC blog, and the bottom of this post for my past weeks’ progress!
